Charles Lester Smith

Charles Lester Smith, 69, departed this earthly life for an eternal home with his heavenly father on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Baylor Hospital Garland. Charles was born November 6, 1946 in San Angelo, Texas to Walter Lawrence Smith and Fannie Mae Eldridge Smith and had two brothers and a sister. He attended Hammond Elementary, Blackshear Junior High and Central High School in San Angelo.

Charles met and united with Hazel Powdrill fathering three sons and raising one additional son and two daughters.

In earlier days, Charles loved driving around San Angelo in his truck. He knew no strangers and loved to talk with friends and share memories of fun events that happened while growing up in San Angelo. Charles loved to listen to old school music, talk about his brothers and sons and sharing fond memories of his mother and father’s teachings. He often kidded and joked with those around him and he had a kind, forgiving heart; showing unconditional love to everyone.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Hazel and one sister Mary Smith Green. He is survived by four sons: Nick Starkey of San Angelo, Dennis Starkey (Nicole) of Philadelphia, PA, Kris Starkey (Analyn) of San Angelo, Timothy Starkey (Cassandra) of San Antonio, TX and two daughters Karen Starkey Birech (Stephen) of Killeen, TX, Teresa Starkey Shaw (Danny) of Richardson, TX; ten grandchildren, two brothers, Olen Smith (Dorothy) of Midland, TX, Harold Smith (Janette) of Rowlett, TX; one niece, Sherel Martin (Leslie) of Cibolo, TX daughter of Mary Smith Green and a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m.on Saturday, June, 18, 2016 in the Miracle Temple Church of God and Christ, 1721 Ellis St., San Angelo, Texas 76905.

Special thanks to Travis and the staff at Park Plaza Nursing Home for Charles’ care during his time there. The family wishes to thank all of those who have prayed for the family and shown kindness during this time of mourning.
